What is Blepharoplasty?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of eye bags or droopy eyelids, then we recommend blepharoplasty which can correct these problems permanently. Through blepharoplasty surgery, not only droopy eyelids or eye bags can be corrected, but also the appearance of tired eyes that often creates the appearance of dark eyes in the lower eye area. To solve these concerns, you can turn to the plastic surgeon to perform these interventions:
- Elimination of the upper eyelids: It intervenes along the natural line of the eyelid to carry out the elimination of excess skin and, if necessary, the muscle is also reshaped. The cut is then closed with very thin threads.
- Correction of eye bags: The incision is made below the eyelashes on the lower eyelid and is well hidden from the eye wrinkles that are created by laughing. The skin is separated from the muscle and fat part and the excess skin is eliminated. Some of the fat can be placed to fill the channel that creates the lower eye area that we often call “occhiaie” or dark eyes. The incision is usually closed with dissolvable sutures.
- Trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty: Fat found in the lower part of the eye, in the so-called eye bags, can be created even without excessive skin release. In this case, the skin does not need to be removed and the incision is made from inside the lower eyelid. This technique completely avoids visible marks.
- The consultation made in advance with the aesthetic surgeon for the remodeling of the eyelids or eye bags will be the one that will determine which procedure is most suitable for the intended aesthetic improvement. The blepharoplasty operation lasts 45-90 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. This operation can be performed in combination with other interventions such as liposuction of the gills or fat injection in different areas of the face such as the lower part of the eye, cheekbones and smile mimicry
Pre-Operative Preparation
- On the day you perform the consultation with the surgeon, you must inform the surgeon if you are allergic to any medication, as well as refer to the doctor if you are taking any medication for health reasons that may influence the performance of the surgical intervention;
- A few days before the operation, you will perform a series of pre-operative examinations which inform the medical staff about your health condition before the operation;
- At least 2 weeks before surgery, you must stop taking drugs containing Acetylsalicylic Acid (such as Aspirin, Vivin C, Cardiospirin, etc.) and stop taking oral anticoagulants. Discontinuation of any therapy due to surgery must be consulted in advance with your doctor who prescribed the therapy;
- Smoking must be stopped at least 2 weeks before the intervention;
- The patient must have taken a shower, remove gel or nail polish products the day before the operation, and not consume food or liquids at least 8 hours before the intervention;
- We recommend that patients wear comfortable clothes with buttons or zippers on the day of surgery.
After the operation
After blepharoplasty, patients are advised to keep their head elevated for several days and stay in cool rooms. The stitches (sutures) are removed approximately 3-5 days after the operation by the medical staff of the clinic. Edema or black marks may last 1-2 weeks, however this varies depending on individual response. Many patients return 5 – 7 days after the procedure although it is advisable to take at least 1 week off after surgery.
